Adios substitutes…
Facebook has been here a long time. Facebook chat, now called Facebook messenger enables us to get in touch with our friends in real time. Would you use it over WhatsApp as your primary means of messaging? I believe the answer to the above question is pretty predictable and largely unanimous. There’s a reason WhatsApp was able to surpass its substitutes (all other platforms for instant messaging) and get the world so hooked to it so fast.
Substitute - “a person or thing acting or serving in place of another”.
From the above definition it turns out Facebook messenger is a substitute to WhatsApp in the instant messaging world, but how did WhatsApp convince the world of it’s superiority? Simple. WhatsApp managed to be leaps and bounds better than Facebook messenger in all aspects of instant messaging. Today we seldom use Facebook messenger and when we do it’s often “in place of” WhatsApp. Hence, Facebook messenger is a substitute.
Let’s shift our attention to a concept as old as time itself - Networking. It’s prevalent in businesses and social situations alike. Today I want to focus just a little bit on the business aspect of it. We network to grow professionally, make contacts and hopefully in the process advance our business. We all know that the traditional process of networking at it’s core, involves the exchange of business cards. Today the scope to network has widened a thousand times over, thanks to the internet and it’s easy accessibility. As a result paper business cards actually limit the scope to network. People naturally found and are using substitutes for the same, in the form of social media networking groups, portals and of course LinkedIn!
